Community centers are at the heart of Malawian villages. They are also the critical partners in goods for good’s work. Malawi’s most ambitious and passionate leaders have responded to the country’s orphan crisis by establishing these organizations.
Today there are over one million orphans in Malawi. While community centers provide the most comprehensive and culturally appropriate services for these children, they lack the resources to completely meet their complex needs.
Through these programs, goods for good equips them with the tools they need.
Tailor Training Program
The Tailor Training Program teaches men and women the technical skills required to become professional tailors. Tailoring students practice techniques learned on surplus fabric and create school uniforms for orphans in their communities. Schools in Malawi require children to wear uniforms. The cost to purchase them often prevents children from attending school.
Community Enterprise
Community Enterprise is a phased investment program for growing businesses at community centers. These enterprises help community centers generate income to support the children who visit them. Ultimately, these enterprises will allow the organizations to sustain themselves.
Community Center Leadership
This program provides administrative and programmatic support to community center staff and leaders.
Through sensitization workshops, skills enhancement trainings and networking opportunities for community center staff, goods for good contributed to the improved management, record-keeping and functioning of centers.
Teacher Supply Closets
The Teacher Supply Closets Program ensures that teachers have the resources they need to teach. goods for good provides teachers at our partner nursery, primary and secondary schools with the educational and creative materials needed to teach and engage their students.
Pens for Progress
Pens for Progress provides over 42,000 primary and secondary school students with three pens per school term.
Shoes for Success
The Shoes for Success Program provides new shoes to impoverished school children. goods for good complements the provision of new school shoes with a single-dose of deworming medicine. This medication cures children of worms that infect children through their feet while barefoot. In 2010, thanks to a partnership with TOMS Shoes and the Ministry of Health, over 40,000 children received new school shoes and deworming tablets.
